What is the QTP lservrc file and where to find it

The LSERVRC file contains the license codes that have been installed. Whenever a new license is registered to a machine, the license code is automatically added to this file. The file is a text file, with no extension. All licenses, with the exception of normal/remote commuter licenses, get stored on the file in question.

Most of the versions of HP products making use of this file, such QuickTest Professional (QTP), if the file isn't located within the BIN folder of the product's installed files, have an implementation of a Windows User Environmental Variable of the same name holding the patch to where this file is located. There are 2 ways of opening/finding the file assuming the system has the LSERVRC environmental variable:

  1. Go to Start menu, select "Run" followed by typing "%LSERVRC%" and click "Ok". When asked which application to use to open file, select Notepad. This will display the contents of the file
  2. The other method, is by going to Start menu, then right click under "My Computer"/"Computer" followed by selecting "Properties". Now search the tab or option starting with "Advanced" on the name and on new pop-up dialog search and click the "Environmental Variables" button. When another dialog appears displaying both the User and System environmental variables of the system, search "LSERVRC" item and read the path stored on it

The following are examples of paths the LSERVRC file could be located:

For a Seat (Stand-alone):

  • QTP version 6.0: <AQT/QTP installation directory>\bin
    ExampleC:\Program Files\Mercury Interactive\QuickTest Professional\Bin\lservrc

  • QTP version 9.2 and below: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Mercury Interactive\License Manager\lservrc

  • QTP version 9.5 and above: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\HP\Functional testing\License

For a Concurrent (Floating) license installation:

  • Concurrent License Server 9.0 (Sentinel version 8.0.2) and above: C:\Program Files\Common Files\SafeNet\ SafeNet Sentinel\ LM Server\WinNT
  • Older Concurrent License Server: "<server installation directory>\<language>"
    ExampleC:\Program Files\Rainbow Technologies\SentinelLM 7.1.0 Server\English\lservrc
